I remember awhile back when I was in Nigeria for some business.

A friend of mine wanted to visit the United States in search of other interesting opportunities that matched his skills. We got all the necessary paperwork together and a date was set, surprisingly quickly, for his visa interview. I'm not sure whether it was to do with the act that I was his sponsor and was in Lagos at the time (we did the whole planning together).

Anyway, the date arrived and I was excited for my buddy because I know what having an opportunity such as this means for a lot of people. It's like being given a new lease of life in some cases. he wasn't just going to come over to the US for a flying visit, we're talking an opportunity to potentially relocate without having to go through "loops and hoops" ... and to be able to do it all above board and legit.

I called his mobile in the morning but couldn't get him so I left a message asking him to call me back when he was finished with the interview appointment.

About an hour later I got a call from my friend who sounded frantic.

He was at the US Embassy but was not allowed in. The reason? He got their late and there was very little likelihood that he would be seen on the day so the officials advised him to reschedule his appointment.

A week later he was still trying to reschedule ... a month later he was denied an interview for apparently no reason at all, and when those guys say "it's over" it really s over and there's very little you can do about it.

When I asked my friend how the heck he had managed to miss his appointment it boiled down to one simple thing.

He FAILED TO TAKE ACTION.

He is still in Lagos trying to come across to this very day.
